Van Der Haute Egg Nog Liqueur

The following review was logged in late December by our faithful follower, Mark Vierow, who was traveling in Las Vegas, NV:

Van Der Haute is made in Mira Loma, California by the American Distilling Company and comes in at a healthy 29.5 proof (14.75% alcohol).

The details:

Texture and thickness was very nice. Thicker than a typical liqueur but thinner than a traditional Egg Nog. Drinkable straight out of the bottle.

Creamy off white, it looks like a traditional Egg Nog. Although there were no flecks of nutmeg, it was delightfully well spiced. Part of which I’m sure can be credited to the spiced rum as an ingredient. It is also is made with Brandy.

Overall flavor was very good however on the first couple sips the alcohol hits a bit stiff. But after the 4th sip you won’t notice as much and it’ll start to warm you up like flannel pajamas in front of a fire.

I’m a fan of Egg Nog, Brandy and Spiced Rum and this one didn’t disappoint. I’m rating this one at 8.8.

This review of Shamrock Vanilla Spice Eggnog comes from and Aldi that was purchased in Apollo Beach, Florida.

Shamrock Creamery is based out of Phoenix, Arizona.

I love vanilla as much as I like eggnog so this was right up my alley. “Rich and creamy with yummy vanilla spice” is the marketing starburst on the label. They weren’t kidding. The pour looked promising; it was very thick with flecks of vanilla. It was more white than a classic nog.

The first sip was a flavor wallop of vanilla and egg. Very sweet and very light on the spice element. It was nice but it was just a bit much as a stand-alone drink. This one will make a nice ingredient for my morning oatmeal and coffee. It’d also be great for waffles or bread pudding. A healthy shot of brandy would also put it in my good graces.

I’m ranking this one at a 6.7.

Promised Land Old Fashioned Egg Nog (Limited Edition)

This review comes from an Aldi purchased in St. Paul, Minnesota. Promised Land Dairy is based out of Dallas, Texas.

I had high hopes for this one based on the label. “Limited Edition”, “Old Fashioned”, images of Jersey cows and whole nutmeg, cinnamon and anise. The marketing folks had certainly done their job.

However, like 95% of the contestants on The Voice, it was good. It deserved to be a player on the stage. But it was never going to have a viral moment.

Texturally it isn’t quite as thick as it should be for a whole milk offering, and it has a strange chalkiness which is noticeable on the finish.

The sweetness level was good but the flavor was weak. Not enough nutmeg to make an impression and no noticeable flecks of spice at all.

I’m ranking this one at 6.3

Deliteful Dairy Creamline Whole Eggnog Milk

When it comes to nationally distributed brands, you expect products and their quality to be consistent year after year, however, sometimes when you shop locally you don’t always have that level of consistency.  Thankfully though, in Western Maryland, we do!  Deliteful Dairy, located in Williamsport, Maryland has perfected flavored milks!  While they offer year round options, such as strawberry, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter to name a few, they offer seasonal flavors as well.  One of them being Eggnog!  This eggnog is fantastic enough it will make you quickly forget how great the pumpkin spice milk was just a few weeks ago!

Since my last review of the same eggnog, they have changed their packaging.  Obviously, it has no effect on the taste, but if you get into aesthetics like me….well, the bottle just looks good!  So I’m already in a great mood before I even take my first sip!

The consistency is spot on.  It has that classic eggnog thickness without being too thick, or too thin.  Perfection!  This eggnog also has a pleasing level of nutmeg too…not too strong, but also present enough that you know it’s there.  If you’re one to add things to eggnog, then do your thing, but if you love simple, high quality eggnog…it’s right here in Maryland!  Assuming most everyone that reads this blog is not local to Maryland, read up on your local dairy farms as a new source of eggnog.  If you visit Maryland, or know anyone who does….a trip to Deliteful Dairy is worth it!!  Enjoy!!

Good & Gather Plant Based Oatmilk Holiday Nog

Dear Target,

But, why?

You certainly do a lot of things right.

I just got the CUTEST little Target Store gingerbread (it’s actually sugar cookies but gingerbread sounds fancier) house from you people. There’s a mini-Target store replica made of confectioneries in my house. So I clearly don’t hate you. Target is fun! See?

Nog-wise, you’ve nailed a few. See the super famous  https://eggnogblog.com to get a look some of positive impressions you’ve made in bellies around the nation.

I’ve fully transitioned into the world of plant-based most things when possible. I mean, obvi, aside from cheese and eggs. I could never!

I’ve tried a few almond nogs (meh) and, this year, was excited to try my first Oat Milk Nog, or Oat Nog, if you will. It for real doesn’t bother me that the nog I drink doesn’t actually have eggs it in. Taste like nog. And, don’t suck–literally the only two requirements for my DF nog.

Because I drink very little dairy, I’m always on the hunt for a *good* dairy-free nog sub. THIS AINT IT.

Targs, whyyyyyyy is it so thick and lumpy?  And, like, not in a good way.  Lumpy like day-after Thanksgiving gravy, *before* it’s reheated. I’m so confused. Did we get a bad batch? Is it *meant* to be lumpy gravy nog? I’m not spending my dollars to find out.

So you get graded on my half-of-one-and-done.

2/10. You get two because the taste isn’t hell, just the texture. If you have to chew your nog, then you know you might need to go ahead and move on.

I was very excited to find my fave (so far) Oat Nog, made by Chobani at Publix this morning. My dairy LOVING 8-year old gulps this stuff down, man. I mean, it’s probs all the sugar in it, but whatever.

Chobani, by the way, I rate 8/10. In the world of plant-based nogs, this one IS IT.

Kroger Rich & Creamy Egg Nog

This comes to us from our good friend, Sloan, age 9.

She was visiting family down in the desert southwest, where, apparently, Kroger is open.

She sampled the store brand brew, and this is what she had to say:

“Sweet and creamy. Could use more cinnamon and nutmeg. Would like it just a bit thicker. 8 out of 10.”

From Mark and Patti Vierow, Apollo Beach, Fla.:

T.G. Lee Egg Nog

“T.G. Lee is a local dairy with locations in Orlando and Tampa.

This was purchased at my local Aldi which sometimes has a curious selection of Eggnog. Sometimes local items, sometimes not. As a fan of eggnog since I was a small child of Norwegian descent, I will try them all. We love the sweet stuff!

But I digress.

T.G. Lee Eggnog is a solid example. Nicely egg colored with flecks of nutmeg present. On the thicker side (as it should be for a full-fat Nog), it was just the right level of sweetness. Perfect for drinking straight out of the fridge or for use as a coffee creamer.

Rating: 7.8″

From Sloan, age 7, in Andover, MN:

Hood Light Eggnog

“Creamy, sweet, and tasty…8.0.”

From Joel in Myrtle Beach, S.C.:

Greenwise (Publix brand) Egg Nog

Green(wise) with envy?

“In general, I’m not a fan of store-brand stuff, but I like Publix a lot and think their Greenwise products are usually a step above the typical generic whatever. As for their nog, it’s rich (I’m a believer in the thicker-the-better nog philosophy), creamy and tasty. I like it and would recommend. I hesitate to put a number rating on anything. I’d just say it’s pretty good.”

From Summer in Surfside Beach, S.C.:

Southern Comfort Vanilla Spice Egg Nog

“This SoCo vanilla spice drinks like a dessert! First sip was sweeter than I prefer but spice had me going back for more…”

Horizon Organic Low-Fat Egg Nog

“Well so far my fave as well as whole family’s fave is Horizon Organic Low Fat. We prefer our nog on lighter thinner side.”

From Jennifer in Hagerstown, Md.:

Deliteful Dairy (Long Delite Farm) Creamline Whole Eggnog Milk

“Taste is good! Hint of nutmeg, but not too overpowering. Doesn’t need to be spiked! Thickness…somewhere between melted Breyers ice cream and cake batter. When Target itsn’t an option…check your local dairy farm!”

Andrea in Cedar Rapids, IA:

Southern Comfort Traditional Egg Nog

“Southern Comfort is way too thick! Good flavor, but I’ve been forced to dilute it with regular milk to make it more drinkable!”

Target/Market Pantry Light Egg Nog:

“Market Pantry Light was pretty good! Good flavor and surprisingly creamy for being light!”

From Jonathan in Rochester, Minnesota, whose family put a whole gauntlet of nogs through a thorough taste test:

“Southern comfort: insipid.
Anderson Erikson: too sweet. Reasonable thickness.
Kemps: more flavor than Southern Comfort, but not much more. Maybe a little too thick. Tastes almost gummy, kind of artificial.
Promised Land: best flavor of the four. A little thin. I thought it almost had a minty aftertaste.”
